Perforated Metal Ceiling, Waitara Station

Historic Waitara train station in Sydney is on track for another century of safe travel after a multimillion-dollar makeover which includes a unique wavy perforated metal ceiling made by Arrow Metal.

The curved perforated metal ceiling was made for the 129-year-old station’s new underpass, built as part of its renovation under the Transport for NSW Transport Access Program (TAP) that improves public transport accessibility across the train network.

Waitara Station is the latest TAP project to rely on Arrow Metal perforated metal to achieve accessibility and design goals, with our panels specified at several other TAP upgraded stations across NSW, including Denistone, Stanmore, and Unanderra, for passenger link footbridges, lift areas, stairs, and balustrade.

Making Waves: How We Created Waitara’s Perforated Ceiling

We worked with project contractor Gartner Rose to create Waitara Station’s unusual underpass ceiling. The architectural vision was an undulating design to create a sense of organic flow.

The correct pattern and metal specification were crucial to achieving the complex brief and ensuring the panels could be curved and manipulated into the right shape without compromising panel design and integrity

For the base metal, aluminium was the top choice – strong and lightweight yet flexible enough to be gently curved. For the pattern, we punched a square-end slot rectangular design in a staggered pitch. We curved panels post-manufacture in a range of different radius, delivered ready to fit and install in the new underpass.

The finished result is a dynamic, striking curved ceiling that’s modern, sustainable, and functional. The linear pattern adds to the feel of movement and direction, perfectly matching the tunnel’s white and grey tiled walls and strip lighting.
