About this project

Coloured Perforated Metal: Willowdale Sports Precinct

You can’t beat using colour as an easy way to make an impact. But at the new Willowdale Sports Precinct in Denham Court, NSW, coloured perforated metal is doing more than getting attention – it’s telling a local cultural story.

Sitting on Dharawal and Gandangara land, the Willowdale Sports Precinct project required different hues of scarlet to reflect the area’s significant Indigenous archaeological heritage, tying into the project’s materiality palette of fire, clay, and ash.

Specified for the roof overhang, interiors, and signage, Arrow Metal’s red perforated metal provides breeze, shade and visual appeal – while linking the building to its landscape and past.

Coloured Perforated Metal Brings History To Life

We used a variety of patterns and colours to achieve the project’s aesthetic goals. Classic round hole P239 is punched into the facade, transforming it into a glowing lantern at night thanks to internal lighting, while hexagonal pattern Electra brings texture to the interiors.

For the WC facilities, we gave traditional signage a new modern twist using PixelPerf – our custom image-to-perforation technology – which recreated a provided silhouette in perforated metal.

But colour was critical. Exterior panels were powder-coated in Dulux Duratec Desert Satin to match the red corrugated roof – a key architectural feature inspired by early settler farm buildings. Inside, we created a custom, made-to-order colour to match the project’s rich, earthy tones.

Each panel was made with folded edges, achieving durability and the clean, architectural lines of Sam Crawford Architect’s building design.

Coloured Perforated Metal Impact: Project Ideas

Willowdale Sports Precinct is just one example of how coloured perforated metal can enhance a project, visually, culturally, and functionally.

We’ve worked on a wide range of projects where colour played a leading role, from striking facades to custom interior finishes:

  • Soft Pearl Matt perforated metal shines as a modern roofing tone for Kingsgrove Avenue Reserve’s amenities block
  • Dark blue perforated metal, used for commercial fixtures and furniture, is the ideal contrast to the marble, stone, timber and gold of interiors at the Sherwood in McArthur
  • Champagne coloured perforated metal is the toast of Thuringowa State High School for its custom hall signage
  • Traditional pale green perforated panels signal the history and heritage of Denistone train station
  • School colour perforated metal fosters a sense of belonging at Sydney Secondary College for its campus makeover
