About this project

Perforated Pavilion Facade, Hurlstone Park

Designing public spaces and places? Take inspiration from our latest project, a stunning perforated pavilion facade for Hurlstone Memorial Reserve’s new ‘in the round’ community centre.

Cleverly built in a Y-shape to maximise accessibility and availability, the new all-weather pavilion by Sam Crawford Architects for City of Canterbury Bankstown Council is a central hub for local life.

Comprising a spacious building off which spans large undercover zones, the Arrow Metal team manufactured the red-coloured perforated pavilion facade and matching roof panels.

Choosing the Pattern for a Perforated Pavilion Facade

As light flow and ventilation control are key benefits of specifying perforated metal, choosing the right pattern was essential to the project, to bring in as much daylight as possible while ensuring weather protection and parkland views. The perforated pavilion facade also needed to complement the Federation style architecture of the local area and the Reserve.

Working closely with project builders 2020 Projects, we perforated 3mm aluminium panels in pattern P244, a closely spaced round hole design featuring 9.5mm perforations in a 12.7mm staggered pitch with a 51% open area.

A large-scale project, it required a total of 79 panels covering almost 280 square metres, which were then curved, folded and powder-coated by project contractors Brothers Metal Fabrication, to achieve the architect’s undulating facade design.

The result is a bright and uplifting community space that is well-lit and welcoming. Through its clever Y-design, no space is wasted, with its covered courtyards serving multiple user groups at once.

Perforated metal for Public Sector Projects

The Hurlstone Memorial Reserve project is an excellent example of how perforated metal can meet the tender requirements of council projects, which typically have strict cost, timescales, and sustainability criteria.

Some of the benefits of specifying perforated metal for public sector projects include:

  • Ability to design the pattern to suit a building’s function, environmental conditions, and visual requirements
  • Sustainability of perforated metal – it is 100% recyclable depending on the base metal selected
  • Panels can be bespoke-made to suit the project budget and timescales, from cost-effective standard designs to CAD-drawn architectural creations
  • Wide choice of colours and finishes for longevity and durability
