About this project

Sunbury Leisure Centre’s new $4m heated swimming pool has the perfect cover – a wave-themed perforated metal sheet facade made by Arrow Metal.

The contemporary charcoal grey facade adds a splash of modern aesthetic to the state-of-the-art therapeutic aqua exercise and rehabilitation facility in Sunbury, Victoria. The warm water pool was purpose-built by Hume Council to support local swimmers affected by injury, muscle strain and age-related mobility conditions.

Perforated metal sheet facade: Custom architectural design

The leisure centre’s ripple-patterned perforated metal sheet facade was achieved through Arrow Metal tooling. Each panel has a different perforation arrangement of 60mm, 70mm and 80mm hole sizes to produce an undulating effect, as created by architects CO-OP Studio.

We worked closely with project architect Kunal Matikiti and steel fabricators SA Steelworks to produce the innovative and striking design, supplying initial samples at an early stage for metal material and finish selection.

Long-length perforated panels for maximum privacy and light

One of the main challenges of the project was the sheer size of each perforated panel, to achieve building coverage as well as privacy and light for facility users.

With the ability to manufacture panels up to 5000mm length, we could easily achieve the specified size of 4000mm x 1100mm, with no horizontal joins for a seamless, flowing pattern in keeping with the architect’s vision.

Each of the 44 panels also featured an easy-fix system of slots for the facade frame, ensuring fast and efficient fitting on site. The anodised charcoal grey finish was carried out by Universal Anodisers, creating a durable and stylish contrast with the building’s glass and brick exterior.

Local rehabilitation and recovery services for Sunbury

The new warm water pool provides essential rehabilitation and recovery services locally, whilst also freeing up capacity in the main indoor pool.

It features disability-compliant access ramps, aquatic wheelchair, changing areas and walk-in spas, making it accessible to all members of the Sunbury community who can benefit from warm water therapy.
