About this project

Perforated Signage, Thuringowa State High School

Thuringowa State High School has unveiled a grade-A renovation featuring giant perforated signage custom-made by Arrow Metal.

The massive installation, which wraps around the Queensland school’s new multipurpose Hall, showcases the impact of thoughtful design in fostering a sense of community, belonging, and pride for educational institutions.

The new perforated signage is punched with the school’s name, badge, and motto – but it’s the four Houses that are the real eye-catchers. The logos of the Beck Bowerbirds, Gollogly Gliders, Gouldian Goannas, and Riverway Red Bellies cover the corners, with the sign’s side elevation devoted to bringing the mascots to life in massive, perforated detail in celebration of each House’s unique spirit and identity.

Creating Custom Perforated Signage with PixelPerf

When project contractor Advantage Signs approached us with this complex brief, we had the exact solution – our PixelPerf custom perforation service. PixelPerf combines our cutting-edge software, advanced tooling machinery, and technical expertise to recreate images, words, and illustrations in perforated metal.

PixelPerf works by translating images into CAD drawings, which control our machinery’s tooling and punching. This ensures 100% replication of even the smallest image details.

It took over 30 aluminium panels to build Thuringowa State High School’s new perforated signage, cut to lengths of up to 3.5m. To reproduce the 3D features of the logos and mascots, we punched various hole sizes from 9.5mm to 3.2mm for the right balance of light and shadow. For extra rigidity and ease of fixing to the Hall substructure, we also double-folded each panel edge.

To finish the incredible installation, we powder-coated the panels with Champagne Kinetic Matt from the Dulux Duratec Eternity collection – a super-durable pearlescent shade for decorative longevity.

A New Era for Thuringowa State High School

In addition to the new Hall, Thuringowa State High School’s $13m renovation included new state-of-the-art Information Technology and Wellbeing classrooms. Students and teachers can now enjoy a vibrant and modern learning environment, with a unique and inspirational communal space achieved by our custom perforated signage.
