Perforated Metal Public Art, Paramount on Parkes

A bold new piece of perforated metal public art in Parramatta is redefining what’s possible with Arrow Metal perforated panels, featuring floating, shifting curves lit from within.

The captivating installation Confluence, by artist Graham Chalcroft of public art specialists Vertebrae, is suspended in the main entry of the award-winning Paramount on Parkes building – a new mixed-use, residential, commercial, and retail development by ALAND in the heart of Parramatta’s CBD.

A stunning blend of light, motion, and perforated metal engineering, the new perforated metal public art tells the story of movement and flow inspired by the journey of water along Clay Cliff Creek to the Parramatta River.

Creating Movement for Parramatta’s Perforated Metal Public Art

Confluence has transformed Paramount on Parkes’ entrance space into an immersive, multi-sensory experience – where perforated metal design plays a critical role in achieving the sense of visual movement.

We punched aluminium panels in round-hole pattern 244 to form the artwork, designed to be installed in double layers to achieve a mesmerising moiré effect – a phenomenon that distorts the pattern to give the illusion the panels are constantly moving, mimicking currents of water.

Each segment is also illuminated by programmable LED lighting in the base, drawing visitors in day and night while creating a striking and safe entry and exit way.

Precision-Perforated to Captivate and Curve

Complemented by a 2D ceiling mural, the entire artwork had to meet strict BCA requirements – and be easy to install.

We ensured each punched panel could be gently curved, powder-coated and attached to ceiling fixings to achieve the artist’s vision. The finished result is a playful, interactive piece of perforated metal public art that constantly changes depending on the view.
