Gold retail displays: Galeries Lafayette, Champs Elysees, Paris

When Paris’ most famous luxury department store creates a new retail and event space inside an old art-deco bank, you know it’s going to be right on the money. BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) architects used a rich material palette for the Galeries Lafayette’s new showcase on the Champs Elysees, that included marble columns and rings of gold perforated metal display stands.

Gold balconies: Student housing, Paris

These student apartments are top of the class for opulent accommodation. Harmonic + Masson Architects used perforated metal screens finished in gold to create individual terraces for each of the 156 flats, that filter light into each space whilst still giving residents privacy. Gold is featured on the entire exterior of the building, making a richly distinctive architectural statement.

Folded gold facade: Gadigal Avenue, Zetland

Enveloped in a finely-woven facade of gold perforated metal, these apartments at Gadigal Avenue, Zetland, are simply stunning. The unique facade was designed by architects Collins and Tuner manufactured by the Arrow Metal team for architects Collins and Turner. It is made from a series of gold aluminium panels, which had to be precisely perforated and folded in a specific way according to location and orientation of each apartment. Featuring fixed and sliding elements, the lattice-like facade unifies the building but gives each residence an individual air of grandeur.
