Our Sustainable Practices in Metal Manufacturing
As Australia heads to net zero, sustainability is on everyone’s agenda – including ours. With contractors, specifiers, and builders facing increasing pressure to ensure their supply chain meets ESG goals and that projects meet eco targets, we’ve adopted even more sustainable practices across our business, making us your go-to green supplier for perforated metal.
Here’s a quick overview of some of the latest enhancements we’ve made while continuing to deliver the same high-quality perforated metal solutions we’re known for:
Harnessing Solar Power
We no longer rely solely on electricity from the grid to manufacture perforated metal – we’ve switched to solar. The new solar panels at our Silverwater factory in New South Wales currently generate 80-90% of the energy we need for our operations, and with summer coming up, that number will be even higher.
This shift has helped us drastically reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy sources, putting us on track to meet our sustainability goals while maintaining our production capabilities. With almost 40% of Australia’s electricity supply now coming from renewables (Clean Energy Council 2024 Report), we’re proud to be part of the national movement toward cleaner, greener energy.
Giving Back to the Grid
The benefits of our solar panels go beyond our factory. On weekends, we automatically send our excess energy back to the grid when production slows down. This helps reduce our operating costs and stabilises the electricity network, supporting local and regional energy demand when it is needed most.
Energy-Efficient Machinery
We’ve invested in modern machinery that uses significantly less energy than traditional machines while maintaining high performance. This investment has helped to reduce operational costs and significantly lower energy consumption when we punch and cut your metal panels – a crucial factor in sustainable manufacturing.
Waste Metal Recycling
Our sustainability practices also cover the metal we don’t use. We recycle 100% of our metal waste, contributing to a circular economy. Whether it’s steel, aluminium, or other materials, all scrap possible is put back into the system to be repurposed. Recycling metals has a huge environmental benefit. Recycling aluminium, for example, uses 95% less energy than it would take to make new aluminium (Australian Aluminium Council) – making it one of the most environmentally friendly construction materials you can use.
Sustainable Metal Options
And speaking of aluminium, it’s a best-seller at Arrow Metal because not only is it 100% recyclable – making it the go-to for sustainable construction and design – its lightweight and robust properties fit most applications, from balustrades and signage to facades and screens.
