Newcastle Architecture Awards: Arrow Metal project wins big
Arrow Metal project NeW Space, University of Newcastle has graduated with a haul of awards from the prestigious annual Newcastle Architecture Awards, including the top Newcastle Jury Prize.
Described as an “exemplar of design for ‘new generation’ learning,” NeW Space achieved success in the Urban Design, Educational Architecture and Interior Architecture categories, before being named the winner of the event’s most prestigious prize.
Modern university campus learning
Designed by Melbourne-based Lyons Architects in partnership with Newcastle-based EJE Architecture, NeW Space is a technology-rich “vertical campus’.
A dynamic learning hub over three levels, NeW Space features collaborative learning and teaching spaces, digital library services, flexible working areas, social spaces and facilities for engagement with industry, business and the community.
Recently profiled in leading architecture and interior publication Architecture AU, the campus features six double-height indoor/outdoor learning spaces on the exterior of the building, created using Arrow Metal’s perforated metal panels.
Perforated metal in modern campus
Produced for project partners JML Engineered Facades, around 410 individual metal panels were expertly perforated by Arrow Metal to form the innovative learning spaces, providing students with natural light and views to local landmarks.
Arrow Metal’s team produced a multitude of highly detailed CAD drawings, which featured special folding detail to achieve the necessary sizes for an exact fit, with many of the panels one-off in manufacture.
NeW Space: Next generation learning
Projected to attract over 3,000 new students and staff to the area, NeW Space is a key element of Newcastle CBD renewal, and was jointly supported by the Australian Government’s Education Investment Fund, NSW Government and the University of Newcastle.
After its success in the Newcastle Architecture Awards, NeW Space is now in the running for the NSW Architecture Awards, which will be announced on 6 July.
